February Is a Dangerous Month.

For the home gardener, February is a dangerous month.

Here in Georgia, it’s not unusual for there to be a string of warm (or at least warmer) days that make you think you should get started with planting something.

It’s dangerous because it often turns quite cold before spring truly arrives. Before this years Snow-ocalypse (Snow-maggedon?), the worst blizzard in Georgia happened in March of ‘93. Even farther back, when I was in the greenhouse business in South Georgia, we bought a truckload of rose bushes for the spring season in early March. A week later there was a hard freeze and we lost 75% of our inventory. (So you’d think I’d learn…)

And yet, my wife and I are beginning to make the rounds of the garden centers near us, planning for Spring.
